Verdict. The 48-year-old man was riding on his motocycle when run over by a car and dragged for yards.  He sustained a traumatic amputation of his left leg below the knee on the scene, which required revision to an above the knee amputation later at the hospital. He also sustained multiple fractures to his left (dominant) arm, multiple fractured ribs, a fracture at C5, and developed compartment syndrome requiring fasciotomies on both upper extremities. He developed radial nerve palsy in his left arm and vocal cord damage which continue to make it difficult for him to speak. He spent nearly one month in the hospital and another month in a rehabilitation facility. He underwent nearly twenty surgeries and will need more in the future. He has permanent pain in both arms, his left leg and neck. A loss of consortium claim was asserted on his wife’s behalf.

A 34-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter were in the street when a vehicle driving by hit them both and fled. He was eventually identified. The mother suffered two neck fractures, a pelvic fracture, three leg fractures, crushed right side ribs, a punctured lung by those ribs, and facial lacerations ($5,000,000 default judgment). Her daughter suffered a fractured left femur, fractured pelvis, fractured ribs and injuries to her right arm and face ($500,000 judgment). A Winnebago County jury returned a verdict in the amount of $472,332.10 for a 53 year old male who was struck by a golf cart while riding his motorcycle on an interior road at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds. The plaintiff sustained a lis franc fracture/dislocation of his left mid foot (all five bones dislocated, three fractured with open reduction/internal screw fixation) when the motorcycle was forced over onto his left foot, bending it in half. The evidence showed he would need a future ankle fusion. The jury deliberated three and one half hours before awarding the plaintiff $47,332.10 for past medical bills, $25,000 for future medical bills, $250,000 for pain and suffering and $150,000 for disability/loss of a normal life (the plaintiff was an avid outdoorsman who had great difficulty walking on uneven ground as a result of his injury). A 30-year-old mother with her 11-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son as passengers were injured when a drunk driver crossed the center line and hit them head-on. The mother suffered a fracture in her right foot and right ankle which required surgery, but her doctor, an orthopedic surgeon, decided against surgery due to her pregnancy. Today she continues to have problems with her right ankle and foot and it is apparent that this will not totally resolve. The son had gone partially through the windshield and split his forehead to the bone. He has fortunately recovered from his massive lacerations but has incredible scars. The daughter had abrasions on her nose and right ankle pain. She continues to suffer with nose respiratory problems. The uninsured defendant died at the hospital. This was an uninsured motorist claim. The mother’s claim settled for $80,000.00; the son, for $73,500.00 and the daughter, $1,000.00. Paid by Farmers Insurance.

Female, age 41, sustained a full thickness tear of her right rotator cuff ($25,461 medical expense) when the vehicle in which she was a passenger was involved in a collision at a Rockford intersection. In February, 2005, a 52-year-old woman parked in the lot of Sam’s Club. She did not know that their practice was to pile plowed snow in an area of the parking lot that was higher than the rest of the lot, and that the snow had then thawed, run over the low part of the lot, and re-froze, creating an unnatural accumulation of ice (black ice). She exited her vehicle and immediately fell and suffered a fractured right shoulder involving immediate surgery. Paid by Pekin Insurance.

Passenger Male, age 25 suffered fatal injuries when his driver, allegedly intoxicated, ran a stop light and collided with a Boone County police vehicle at Rockford intersection. On December 11, 2006, a 59 year old man while taking trash out of his rented office space to the bin sitting near the parking lot/driveway slipped on an accumulation of ice on the driveway. The gutter was leaking melted snow onto the driveway which had frozen causing a "black ice" situation. He fell on the ice fracturing his left humerus and left elbow. The gutter and down spout were situated so that any water would run out of the down spout onto the driveway where people would walk to the parking lot and trash bin. Settled with Auto Owners Insurance prior to trial.
